Fake Reviews
So after reading the Macphun website and the glowing reviews, apparently from a screen shot of the app store, I downloaded this. I went to ‘add catalog’ and it wouldn’t open my iPhoto library. So, I tried to drag and drop it to the window, which did work. I have 45,000 photos in my iPhoto and Snapselect has just displayed an unchanged ‘progress’ bar that says ‘loading images from catalog’ for the last hour.
Now I see here that the reviews on their website aren’t here at all - so their screen shot is faked and obviously so are the reviews. I’ll let it run over night, but I’m sure glad I have a Time Machine backup in case this flaky app eats my library… I’ve had similar bad experiences with other ‘duplicate detectors’ that claim to work with IPhoto/Aperture libraries…
Update… let it run over night and it produced over 999+ duplicates (or close matches as per it’s filter). That was encouraging. But, first pair I looked at, there is no info on the path or dimensions of either one… you have to pick the photo and it displays a truncated file name/path. But it seems to kick off some process when you select one, as the beach ball comes up for a few seconds. OK, so I picked the one I wanted to delete and hit the X (there are no pop-over tool tips so you have to assume the obvious and guess at the rest). It takes 30 seconds to delete a photo. So… this will make me days… weeks… to use this tool to remove duplicates. This is on a 2012 iMac i7 with 32GB of RAM. So what happens on a Mini or MacBook I can only imagine.
